Development of a Rapid Diagnostic Kit for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Objective:

To conceptualize, design, and develop a rapid, point-of-care diagnostic test for UTI that is accurate, easy-to-use, and compliant with IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic) regulatory requirements.

Background:

The client aimed to launch a low-cost, high-sensitivity UTI detection kit for use in primary healthcare centers across rural India. The challenge was balancing performance with affordability while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Challenges:

  • Limited R&D infrastructure with the client

  • Strict time-to-market deadlines (6 months)

  • Need for cold chain-free stability for rural distribution

Approach:

1. Concept & Feasibility:

  • Conducted market analysis and clinical requirement gathering

  • Evaluated biomarkers suitable for rapid detection (e.g., leukocyte esterase, nitrite)

  • Performed feasibility screening for lateral flow immunoassay platform

2. Prototype Development:

  • Designed test strip layout using nitrocellulose membrane

  • Optimized antibody conjugation and reagent pads

  • Developed buffer formulations for sample preparation

3. Analytical & Clinical Validation:

  • Conducted sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility studies

  • Partnered with a diagnostic lab for patient sample testing (n=300+)

  • Accelerated aging and real-time shelf-life studies

  • Designed packaging for humidity protection and room temperature storage

5. Regulatory & Scale-Up:

  • Compiled technical documentation as per IVD standards
